About

How care addresses upper-neck nerve pain

Occipital neuralgia often causes pain near the back of the head, but the source can overlap with neck injury symptoms. We review the collision history, pain location, scalp sensitivity, and neck movement before discussing treatment. Our care may include an occipital nerve block, targeted interventional procedures, or another plan suited to the examination. We also consider related conditions such as whiplash, headaches, radiculopathy, and traumatic brain injuries. Risks and failure points matter. Pain can return if the underlying neck problem remains active, and a procedure may not match the true pain source. We check the response and document findings so the next clinical decision is based on the patient’s condition, not on pain location alone.

Process

Steps from symptom review to nerve pain care

1

Review the collision and pain pattern

We record how the pain began, where it travels, what triggers it, and which neck symptoms occur with it.

2

Examine the neck and scalp

We assess tenderness, sensation, movement, and related injury signs to identify findings that support or challenge an occipital nerve source.

3

Choose the treatment path

If the findings fit, we may discuss an occipital nerve block, another interventional procedure, or continued medical care.

4

Track response and documentation

We record the clinical response and update the plan when symptoms persist, return, or point toward another source.

What to bring before discussing nerve pain care

Bring information that helps us connect the head pain with the motor vehicle collision.

  • A list of current medicines and known allergies.
  • Any imaging reports or medical records from the collision.
  • A short description of pain location, triggers, and changes.
  • Details about earlier treatment and how symptoms responded.
  • Your attorney’s contact information when an attorney lien supports care.

The staff (Tracy) and the medical folks are very nice. They explain everything to you in plain language before you even get started, and once you see doctor (Dr Scott), the assistant (Areyana) is gentle & sweet. They both will walk you through the entire process verbally, as they go and they make sure you are good before you leave as well. Above & beyond when it comes to bedside manner. Just make sure you don't get lost in the Kroger parking lot, listening to GPS. The clinic is inside Arrowhead across the street, behind Subway.

Questions about care for occipital nerve pain

Who provides care for occipital neuralgia after a car accident?

Premier Injury Specialists provides care for occipital neuralgia after auto accidents. Our team includes board-certified physicians in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine, along with a certified physician assistant. We focus on collision injuries, assess related neck problems, and document the treatment plan. We don't provide general primary care, urgent care, or workers’ compensation care.

What type of doctor is best for occipital neuralgia?

A pain management physician can assess nerve pain and related neck injuries. Our board-certified physicians review the pain pattern, examination findings, and collision history before recommending care. Treatment may include an occipital nerve block or another interventional option. The best plan depends on the diagnosed source and the patient’s broader injury picture.

What makes the cost of an occipital nerve block different for each patient?

The cost depends on the evaluation, procedure selected, clinical findings, and billing arrangement. We offer free consultations so patients can discuss their situation before treatment. Care may be billed through MedPay or an attorney lien, and we work with personal injury attorneys on injury documentation. We don't publish a business price in advance.

Can I receive a same-day evaluation in Stockbridge after a collision?

Same-day evaluations are available when possible at our Stockbridge clinic. Availability depends on the clinic schedule and the patient’s needs. We first review the injury history and symptoms, then explain whether an evaluation or another step fits the situation. Our regular hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am to 6 pm.

What happens if an occipital nerve block doesn't relieve the pain?

Persistent pain calls for a fresh review of the diagnosis and treatment plan. Our physicians assess the response, revisit neck findings, and consider whether another injury source explains the symptoms. Pain can involve more than one structure after a collision, so the next step should follow the updated examination and documented clinical response.

Should I see a pain physician or an orthopedic doctor for this head pain?

A pain management physician is suited to assess nerve pain and interventional treatment options. An orthopedic evaluation may address certain bone, joint, or structural concerns. Our team evaluates collision-related head and neck symptoms and coordinates care with referring professionals when another specialty is needed. The examination determines which path fits the findings.

What records should I bring to the first consultation?

Medical records, imaging reports, medication details, and a symptom history help us assess the injury. Bring collision information and any prior treatment notes you have. A short record of pain triggers and treatment response can also help. Patients using an attorney lien should bring their attorney’s contact information for coordinated documentation.

Key Points About Occipital Neuralgia Treatment

  • Occipital neuralgia can cause pain behind the head and scalp tenderness.
  • A neck examination helps separate nerve pain from other collision-related headaches.
  • An occipital nerve block is considered only when clinical findings support it.
  • Returning pain requires reassessment, not an automatic repeat procedure.
  • MedPay or an attorney lien may support billing for auto accident care.

Scenarios

When Customers Call Us About Occipital Neuralgia Treatment

1

Pain That Reaches The Scalp

Pain behind the head can feel sharp, burning, or tender after a collision. The key issue is whether the pattern matches occipital nerve irritation or another neck injury. Write down triggers, scalp sensitivity, and neck movement changes before your consultation, then bring any collision records so we can compare symptoms with the examination.

2

Pain Returns After An Injection

Returning pain doesn't always mean the same procedure should be repeated. The response, timing, neck findings, and original diagnosis all matter when we reassess the plan. Schedule a consultation so our physicians can review what changed, check for another pain source, and document the next recommendation.

3

Documentation For An Injury Claim

Patients working with personal injury attorneys often need medical records that connect symptoms, findings, and treatment decisions. Our coordinated practice documents the injury evaluation and care plan for that purpose. Bring relevant collision records and attorney details, and we'll explain how medical documentation fits into treatment.

Our Other Services

Knee Pain TreatmentKnee pain after a crash can affect stairs, walking, and everyday balance. We assess joint tenderness, swelling, and movement, then discuss options such as a knee injection when inflammation or joint damage contributes to pain.
Auto Accident Injury EvaluationAfter a collision, neck stiffness, dizziness, or back pain can signal injuries that need prompt review. Our physicians assess whiplash, herniated discs, radiculopathy, and soft-tissue damage, then create a documented treatment plan for your recovery.
Epidural Steroid InjectionsArm or leg pain from an irritated spinal nerve can make driving, sleeping, and working difficult. An epidural steroid injection places medication near the affected nerve root to reduce inflammation and support meaningful movement.
Facet Joint InjectionsPain from irritated facet joints can worsen with standing, bending, or turning your neck. A facet joint injection targets the painful spinal joint with medication, helping identify the source and ease localized back or neck pain.
Medial Branch BlocksPersistent spine pain may come from small nerves serving the facet joints rather than a disc. Medial branch blocks temporarily numb those nerves, giving physicians useful diagnostic information and helping guide later treatment decisions.
Occipital Nerve BlocksPain behind the skull, scalp tenderness, and shooting sensations can point to irritated occipital nerves. An occipital nerve block delivers medication near those nerves, which may calm head and upper-neck pain during daily activities.
