Why does back pain keep returning after an auto accident, and when should I ask about medial branch blocks?

A pain physician reviews the pain pattern, physical findings, and available records before deciding whether medial branch blocks fit the case. New weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, or severe sudden symptoms need urgent medical attention.

Working With Our Team in Lovejoy

Medial branch blocks focus on pain linked to small nerves near the facet joints of the spine. These joints help guide movement between the vertebrae, and irritation can contribute to neck or lower back pain after a collision.

The procedure may suit patients whose symptoms and examination point toward facet-related pain. It isn't the right fit for every disc, nerve root, or muscle injury, so our physicians match the treatment to the clinical findings.

This page serves people in Lovejoy who need a focused decision about targeted spinal pain care after a motor vehicle collision. The next step is an evaluation that connects your symptoms, examination, records, and treatment goals.

  • Confirm whether the pain pattern may involve spinal facet joints.
  • Review the collision history, symptoms, examination findings, and available medical records.
  • Discuss local anesthetic, needle placement, risks, and other treatment options.
  • Request a written treatment plan and medical documentation for ongoing care.

Service Overview

Medial branch blocks are targeted injections that place local anesthetic near small nerves carrying pain signals from spinal facet joints.

  • Facet joint injections treat the joint area directly, while medial branch blocks test and reduce pain signals from nearby nerve branches.
  • Premier Injury Specialists provides this care for eligible auto accident patients in Lovejoy and throughout South Metro Atlanta.
Process

How We Perform Targeted Spinal Blocks

1

Review the injury and pain pattern

We review the collision history, symptoms, examination findings, prior care, and available records before selecting a treatment plan.

2

Explain the injection plan

Our physician explains the purpose of the block, local anesthetic, possible risks, and questions that should be answered before consent.

3

Prepare the treatment area

We complete sterile preparation and position the patient so the selected spinal area can be approached safely.

4

Guide needle placement

Fluoroscopy guidance helps the physician direct the needle toward the intended medial branch nerve location.

5

Review findings and next steps

We discuss the clinical response, update the treatment plan when appropriate, and record the visit in the medical documentation.

What Patients Should Weigh Before Choosing This Care

Match the block to the pain pattern

Patients should receive a clear reason for targeting medial branch nerves. Our physicians connect the proposed injection to the examination and documented symptoms. This service may be the wrong choice when findings point mainly to a different source, such as a herniated disc with nerve root symptoms.

Ask how the procedure is guided

Fluoroscopy guidance helps the physician plan needle placement near the intended spinal structures. Patients can ask how the images, anatomy, and injection plan fit their individual findings.

Keep the record connected

Auto accident patients often need more than a procedure note. Our team links the evaluation, treatment plan, and follow-up documentation so the clinical record stays organized.

How Targeted Spinal Blocks Support Recovery

A targeted block can help clarify whether facet-related nerves contribute to your pain.

The treatment plan stays connected to your examination instead of relying on symptoms alone.

Focused care may help guide later choices, including facet procedures or radiofrequency ablation.

Detailed records give patients and personal injury attorneys a clearer account of the injury evaluation.

Coordinated care keeps the evaluation, procedure discussion, and documentation within one injury-focused practice.

The staff (Tracy) and the medical folks are very nice. They explain everything to you in plain language before you even get started, and once you see doctor (Dr Scott), the assistant (Areyana) is gentle & sweet. They both will walk you through the entire process verbally, as they go and they make sure you are good before you leave as well. Above & beyond when it comes to bedside manner. Just make sure you don't get lost in the Kroger parking lot, listening to GPS. The clinic is inside Arrowhead across the street, behind Subway.

The staff were super friendly and efficient with my back injections. They made me feel safe and I made a great connection with the receptionist. I was actually surprised by the low level of pain. I’ve had back injections before that were very painful, but these injections felt like a little pinch. Would definitely Recommend this facility.

Questions About Targeted Spinal Blocks

How are medial branch blocks performed?

Sterile preparation comes first, followed by fluoroscopy-guided needle placement near the selected medial branch nerves. Local anesthetic is then delivered at the planned site. Premier Injury Specialists explains the purpose, risks, and treatment plan before the procedure. The physician also reviews the clinical findings and documents the care for the patient’s ongoing record.

What should I bring to my first pain evaluation for Medial Branch Blocks?

Medical records, imaging reports, medication details, and the collision history help our physician assess the pain source. Bring any prior treatment notes you have, including information about injections or therapy. A written symptom list can also help you describe movements that worsen the pain. Our team reviews these details during the injury evaluation.

Which findings support a targeted nerve block for Medial Branch Blocks?

A matching pain pattern and examination findings support consideration of a targeted nerve block. Facet-related neck or back pain may fit, but disc, muscle, and nerve root problems need separate review. Our physician compares the history, examination, and records before recommending treatment. The procedure isn't selected from symptoms alone.

When might radiofrequency ablation enter the discussion for Medial Branch Blocks?

Radiofrequency ablation may enter the discussion after a physician confirms that targeted medial branch nerves contribute to the pain. It uses heat to interrupt selected nerve signals for a longer treatment effect. Our team first reviews the response to prior care and the documented diagnosis. The recommendation depends on the individual clinical picture.

Why might the procedure not fit my back pain?

A procedure may not fit when the examination points to another pain source or when the symptoms need a different type of care. Herniated discs, sciatica, and muscle injuries can require different treatment plans. Our physicians explain the reason for their recommendation and discuss other options when the findings do not support a targeted block.

What decides the cost before treatment starts?

The evaluation, treatment plan, affected spinal area, and billing arrangement decide the cost before treatment starts. Premier Injury Specialists offers Free Consultations for patients who want to discuss their case. MedPay or an attorney lien may apply to eligible auto accident care. Our staff can explain the billing path during the consultation.
