  • What you get: The patient leaves with a documented pain response and a clearer treatment plan.

Why does back pain return after medial branch blocks?

Back pain can return because medial branch blocks test pain from small spinal joints, but they do not permanently treat every pain source. A follow-up visit helps review the response, check other symptoms, and decide whether another treatment fits. Ongoing leg pain, weakness, or numbness can point to a different cause and needs medical review.

Medial Branch Blocks in Candler-McAfee: Pain Confirmation and Next Steps

Medial branch blocks are used when neck or back pain may come from facet joints. A small amount of medication is placed near the medial branch nerves that carry signals from those joints.

The key buyer decision comes after the injection. A strong but temporary change in the target pain can support further planning, while little change may lead our physicians to review other causes, such as disc pain or nerve irritation. This service is not a general primary care visit.

Our medial branch blocks care fits people injured in motor vehicle collisions. We review the injury history, symptoms, exam findings, and available records before discussing the next step. Patients in Candler-McAfee receive care through our Stockbridge clinic, which serves the wider South Metro Atlanta area.

Service Overview

Medial branch blocks are targeted injections that test whether small spinal joints contribute to neck or back pain.

  • These blocks help confirm a pain source, while radiofrequency ablation uses heat to interrupt selected pain signals for longer-term treatment planning.
  • Premier Injury Specialists provides this care for auto accident injuries in Candler-McAfee and throughout South Metro Atlanta.

What Pain Confirmation Can Change

A documented response can help narrow the likely source of facet-related pain.

The result gives you a clearer basis for discussing radiofrequency ablation.

Focused assessment can keep treatment planning tied to your injury findings.

Detailed records support continuity between evaluation, procedures, and follow-up care.

Process

How We Plan Medial Branch Blocks

1

Review the collision injury

We review the accident history, pain location, movement limits, examination findings, and available medical records.

2

Match symptoms to facet pain

Our physicians assess whether the pain pattern and exam support a targeted medial branch block.

3

Perform the targeted injection

We place medication near the selected medial branch nerves as part of the planned procedure.

4

Record the pain response

We document how the familiar pain changes after the block and compare that response with the treatment goal.

5

Discuss the next treatment

We explain whether the findings support radiofrequency ablation, another injection, or a different care plan.

Why This Service May Fit Your Treatment Plan

Pain response guides the decision

The response to a targeted block gives our physicians useful information about facet-related pain. We use that finding with your symptoms and exam, not by itself.

Care stays focused on collision injuries

Our practice treats people injured in motor vehicle collisions. We do not provide general primary care, urgent care, or workers’ compensation care.

The next procedure needs a reason

Radiofrequency ablation may enter the discussion when the block supports facet-related pain. The service is the wrong fit when symptoms point to another source, such as untreated nerve compression.

The staff (Tracy) and the medical folks are very nice. They explain everything to you in plain language before you even get started, and once you see doctor (Dr Scott), the assistant (Areyana) is gentle & sweet. They both will walk you through the entire process verbally, as they go and they make sure you are good before you leave as well. Above & beyond when it comes to bedside manner. Just make sure you don't get lost in the Kroger parking lot, listening to GPS. The clinic is inside Arrowhead across the street, behind Subway.

The staff were super friendly and efficient with my back injections. They made me feel safe and I made a great connection with the receptionist. I was actually surprised by the low level of pain. I’ve had back injections before that were very painful, but these injections felt like a little pinch. Would definitely Recommend this facility.

Questions About Medial Branch Blocks and Follow-Up Care

What happens at the follow-up visit if the blocks reduce my pain?

A follow-up visit reviews your pain response and sets the next treatment plan. Our physicians compare the change with your symptoms, exam findings, and medical records. Strong relief can support a discussion about radiofrequency ablation, but it does not promise a specific outcome. Limited relief may lead to a review of other pain sources and different treatment options.

How do I know whether facet joints cause my back pain?

Facet-related pain is assessed through your symptoms, examination, history, and response to a targeted block. Pain location alone cannot confirm the source. We ask how the familiar pain changes after the injection and record that response. Disc pain, nerve irritation, and soft-tissue injuries can produce overlapping symptoms, so the full evaluation matters.

Which records should I bring before an injection is planned?

Medical records help our physicians connect the collision, symptoms, and prior care. Bring available imaging reports, visit notes, medication information, and accident-related records. We review what you have during the injury evaluation and explain what the treatment plan requires. You should also describe changes in pain, numbness, weakness, and movement.

When could radiofrequency ablation enter the discussion for Medial Branch Blocks?

Radiofrequency ablation enters the discussion when the block supports facet-related pain and the clinical findings fit. Our physicians review the strength of pain relief, remaining symptoms, examination, and records before recommending that option. The discussion does not replace a full evaluation, and another treatment may fit better when symptoms suggest disc or nerve involvement.

Can auto accident patients in Candler-McAfee use MedPay for this care?

MedPay may apply to medical care after an auto accident, depending on the policy and claim. Our staff can discuss MedPay or an attorney lien during the intake process. Bring available claim details so the billing discussion matches your case. Coverage questions do not determine whether a procedure is medically appropriate.

Why might a block provide little or no relief?

Limited relief can mean the treated facet joints are not the main pain source. Disc problems, nerve irritation, muscle injury, and other conditions can create similar symptoms. We review the pain pattern and examination, then discuss whether another evaluation or treatment is appropriate. New weakness, loss of bladder control, or severe worsening needs urgent medical attention.
