What Is Spondylosis?

Spondylosis is age-related wear in the spine that can affect discs, joints, and nearby bones. In the neck, these changes may cause stiffness, aching, or limited movement. Some people have spondylosis without symptoms. The condition can also irritate nearby nerves when bone or tissue narrows the space around them.

Key Takeaways About Spondylosis

  • Spondylosis involves changes in spinal discs, joints, or bones.
  • Neck spondylosis may cause stiffness without causing nerve symptoms.
  • Spondylosis is not the same as a herniated disc.

How Spondylosis Works

Spondylosis

Spondylosis develops as spinal discs lose some height and flexibility. The joints and bones around the discs may then change as the spine moves. These changes can affect how the neck bends and turns.

Doctors assess spondylosis through your symptoms, movement, and medical history. Imaging may show disc changes, joint changes, or narrowed spaces. The scan alone does not prove that spondylosis causes pain. A clinician compares the image with your symptoms and examination.

Neck spondylosis may cause local aching and stiffness. Irritation near a nerve can also cause pain, tingling, or weakness that travels into an arm.

Spondylosis

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we review neck pain, we compare reported symptoms with the examination and available imaging. We look for signs that spondylosis may involve a facet joint, a disc, or a nearby nerve. Our team also considers other causes, such as muscle pain or a recent injury.

Spondylosis in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with neck spondylosis may feel stiffness when turning the head and aching after extended activity. If a nearby nerve is irritated, symptoms may also travel from the neck into the shoulder or arm.
