What Is Facet Arthropathy?

Facet Arthropathy is wear or inflammation in the small facet joints at the back of the spine. These joints help guide spinal movement and support the vertebrae. Changes in a facet joint can cause local back or neck pain, stiffness, and pain with certain movements. Imaging may show these changes, but symptoms guide treatment decisions.

Key Takeaways About Facet Arthropathy

  • Facet arthropathy affects small joints behind the spinal bones.
  • Pain often stays near the neck or lower back.
  • Facet arthropathy isn't the same as a disc problem.

How Facet Arthropathy Works

Facet Arthropathy

Facet Arthropathy develops when a facet joint becomes irritated or changes over time. Facet joints sit behind the spinal bones and help control bending and turning. Their surfaces contain cartilage, which helps the joint move smoothly.

Doctors consider symptoms, a physical examination, and imaging when assessing facet-related pain. Imaging may show joint wear, but visible changes don't always explain a person's pain. A facet joint injection can place medicine near the joint to help assess and treat suspected pain from that area.

How Facet Joint Injections Relate

Facet joint injections target a selected facet joint with imaging guidance. The injection may contain a numbing medicine and an anti-inflammatory medicine. Pain relief can help show whether that joint contributes to the symptoms.

Facet arthropathy

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we assess facet arthropathy, we compare the pain location with movement findings and available imaging. We also consider whether symptoms fit a facet joint before discussing a facet joint injection. Our team reviews the response to the injection as one part of the overall pain assessment.

Facet Arthropathy in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with lower back pain may feel worse when standing, leaning backward, or twisting. If the symptoms point to a painful facet joint, a facet joint injection may help test that source and provide relief.
