What Is the Epidural Space?

The epidural space is a narrow area inside the spinal canal that surrounds the outer covering of the spinal cord and spinal nerves. This space contains fat and small blood vessels. Doctors may place medicine there to reduce inflammation around irritated nerves, often during an epidural steroid injection.

Key Takeaways About Epidural Space

  • The epidural space sits outside the spinal cord's protective covering.
  • Medicine placed there may reach inflamed spinal nerves.
  • The epidural space is not the same as the spinal cord.

How Epidural Space Works

Epidural space refers to the area between the spinal canal and the dura, which is the tough outer covering around the spinal cord and nerves. The space contains fatty tissue and blood vessels. Spinal nerves pass through nearby openings as they leave the spinal canal.

During an Epidural Steroid Injection, a clinician guides a needle toward this space near an irritated nerve. Imaging may help confirm the needle's position. The medicine can then spread around nearby nerve roots and may reduce local inflammation. The injection site depends on the symptoms and the part of the spine involved.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we plan an epidural steroid injection, we match the suspected nerve area with the symptoms and examination findings. We also review available imaging to help guide the injection toward the relevant part of the epidural space. This planning supports a focused procedure and clearer follow-up.

Epidural Space in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with leg pain from an irritated lumbar nerve may receive an epidural steroid injection near the affected area. The medicine is placed in the epidural space so it can reach tissues around that nerve root.
