What Is a Disc Bulge?

A Disc Bulge is a spinal disc change where the disc extends outward beyond its usual boundary. The outer disc layer remains mostly intact, but the widened shape can press on nearby nerves or other tissues. Some disc bulges cause pain or numbness, while others cause no noticeable symptoms.

Key Takeaways About Disc Bulge

  • A bulge spreads across part of the disc’s outer edge.
  • Imaging findings and symptoms do not always match.
  • A bulge is not the same as a focal disc herniation.

How Disc Bulge Works

Disc Bulge describes an outward change in a spinal disc. A disc has a soft center and a tougher outer layer. With a bulge, the outer layer extends beyond the disc’s usual border across a broader area.

Doctors review the disc’s location and its effect on nearby structures. An MRI may show whether the bulge touches a nerve root or narrows available space. A broad bulge differs from a herniation, which usually involves a more focused area of disc material. The scan finding must be considered alongside pain, weakness, numbness, and physical examination results.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we review a disc bulge, we connect imaging findings with the person’s symptoms and examination. We check whether the bulge’s location matches the reported pain pattern, numbness, or weakness. Our team also considers nearby conditions, such as nerve root irritation, before discussing herniated disc treatment.

Disc Bulge in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with lower back pain may have an MRI showing a disc bulge near a lumbar nerve root. If the symptoms follow that nerve’s path, the finding may help explain the complaint.
