What Is a Dermatome?

A dermatome is an area of skin supplied by sensory nerves from one spinal nerve root. Doctors use dermatomes to map symptoms such as pain, tingling, or numbness. The pattern can help connect a neck nerve problem with symptoms traveling into the shoulder, arm, or hand.

Key Takeaways About Dermatome

  • Each dermatome relates to one spinal nerve root.
  • Symptom patterns can help locate a cervical nerve problem.
  • A dermatome is not the same as a muscle or blood vessel map.

How Dermatome Works

Dermatome describes a skin region connected to sensory fibers from one spinal nerve root. Sensory fibers carry information about touch, pain, temperature, and pressure toward the nervous system.

Related glossary terms: Nerve Root, Radiculitis, Paresthesia.

A clinician compares the location and quality of symptoms with known dermatome patterns. In cervical radiculopathy, symptoms may follow a path from the neck into the shoulder, arm, or hand. The pattern is one part of an exam and is reviewed with strength, reflexes, and other findings.

Nerve root symptoms can overlap because nearby regions do not always follow exact borders. A dermatome map guides the exam, but it does not diagnose the cause by itself.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we assess cervical radiculopathy, we compare reported symptoms with the related dermatome pattern. We also check strength, reflexes, sensation, and movement so the symptom map fits the wider clinical exam.

Dermatome in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with cervical radiculopathy may describe burning or tingling from the neck into part of the arm and hand. We compare that path with a dermatome pattern to help identify the spinal nerve root involved.
