What Is A Bursa?

A bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac that cushions movement between bones, tendons, muscles, and skin. Bursae help reduce friction near joints, such as the shoulder, hip, knee, or elbow. Irritation or swelling in a bursa can cause localized pain and may affect how a joint moves.

Key Takeaways About Bursa

  • A bursa cushions tissues near joints.
  • Bursa pain usually stays near the affected area.
  • A bursa is not the same as a joint.

How Bursa Works

A bursa contains a small amount of fluid that lets nearby tissues glide during movement. It sits where rubbing may occur, such as between a tendon and bone. This cushion helps limit friction and pressure around the joint.

Inflammation can make a bursa swollen and tender. A clinician may check the painful area, joint motion, and symptoms during an evaluation. In the context of Joint Injections, the bursa's location helps guide treatment toward the structure causing pain. The bursa and the joint remain separate structures, even when both are near the same body part.

From the Premier Injury Specialists team

When we assess bursa-related pain, we connect the tender location with movement, range of motion, and the surrounding joint structures. Our team uses that information to decide whether a joint injection should target the bursa or a different source of pain.

Bursa in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with shoulder pain may have irritation in a bursa near the shoulder joint. During a joint injection evaluation, the clinician identifies whether the bursa matches the person's pain pattern before selecting the target.
